Water Rose Apple is a tree, 3-10 m tall, with short and crooked trunk, 30-50 cm in diameter, often branched near the base and with irregular canopy. Leaves are opposite, elliptic-heart-shaped to obovate-oblong, 7-25 x 2.5-16 cm, not or slightly aromatic when bruised; leaf-stalk 0.5-1.5 mm long. Flowers are borne at branch-ends and in leaf-axils, in 3-7-flowered clusters. Flowers are 2.5-3.5 cm in diameter; sepal-cup 5-7 mm long; petals 4, spoon-shaped, up to 7 mm long, yellow-white; stamens 0.75-2 cm long, numerous; style up to 17 mm long. Fruit is a berry, top-shaped, 1.5-2 x 2.5-3.5 cm, crowned by the fleshy sepal-cup segments, white to red, glossy; flesh very juicy, watery, hardly aromatic. Water Rose Apple is native to Malesia to N. Queensland, widely cultivated in NE India.
